BYOD, Games and Employee Engagement


It has been a while since my last Post, for that I apologise.....I am busy trying to assist a number of start-ups find their feet!

Following on from my last Post, which will now be out-of-date.......as is the way for any quoted statistics. I wonder how much thought employers, especially C level employers give to the gaming industry?

Do they realise just how many of their current employees spend playing multiplayer online games, and more importantly the level of engagement that is achieved that does not exist or that they do not bring into the working environment?

I wonder if they realise the demographics of the gaming community and how this has changed, no longer is the community adolescent boys hidden away in bedrooms, but a thriving community spanning all ages and both sexes.

One of the key areas that will influence future gaming technologies in the workplace is the fact that computing at home or home digital services - machines, software, options and user interfaces deliver compelling entertainment. The home digital experience has not only not arrived at the office, but is also far better.

BYOD (bring your own device) has caused headaches for some highly governed large corporate IT departments, further more BYOD was created by the user community not the company. If we look at taking this further Salesforce.com owed some of its success to sales personnel actually purchasing the SaaS solution to use as their own CRM, due to inadequacies within their company offering.

It's a bit of a stretch today, to imply that the working gaming community will utilise Playstations or XBox in a BYOD situation, but how many are using and paying for apps that assist with work on their phones and tablets?

With the Cloud now playing a key role in many organisations strategy, how long before the User and the Company converge, and more importantly when will the strategy, HR department and Board actively engage with the gaming community that works within their organisations to the benefit of increased employee engagement and communications, directly relating to the bottom line?

20 year Anniversary - Sony PlayStation 1

So 20 years on and it's the anniversary of the PlayStation 1. 20 years ago Nintendo commented in the press that "We do recognise Sony as a major player, it's just we are confident that we know video games better than anyone, and we feel supremely confident that at every technical turn the Ultra 64 is a superior machine to the PlayStation". The key difference between the PlayStation and the Ultra was that the PlayStation utilised the CD ROM and the Ultra was cartridge based. I was not aware until I started to research the launch of the PlayStation, the original launch that is.
