Northumbrian Water - Game Design Competition

Here is an introduction from James Robbins - Northumbrian Water Chief Information Officer.

Here at Applio we recently entered the Northumbrian Water Game Design Competition, which has been an interesting experience. It is always nice to see an initiative within a large corporation that mirrors some of the work that your organisation has been developing over the past 18+ months!

The Serious Games marketplace is currently growing at a significant rate within the UK, although in my opinion there are is some product segmentation occurring:

  1. Gamification
  2. Simulation
  3. Bespoke Serious Games / Apps

All of the above can be deployed to good effect, these solutions are deployed in the corporate world with decisions based upon the ROI and usability of the solution.

Gamification is not that expensive and is used to gamify an existing business process - using leader boards, points, awards etc to engage the user base.

Simulation comes in many guises - a 747 flight simulator is a major investment, but far cheaper to undertake training in a simulator that an actual 747 - it is also somewhat safer!

Bespoke Games / Apps are well, bespoke games and apps - built for an organisation to address a defined issue - like Health & Safety / Learning & Development / On-boarding etc.

I think the key to enabling rapid growth within the Serious Games industry will be the ability for organisations to purchase, create, build and sell their content that is then delivered via a Serious Games architecture.

Think about it - if an organisation was embarking upon a major change programme and wanted to communicate, engage and educate the 5,000 employees - they could purchase a 'communication game framework' from a provider, upload their own content, scenarios etc. and deliver the Gaming experience via individual teams within the organisation. Delivering the required comms, engagement and education required in a Consistent, Repeatable, Professional and Engaging format.

Here at Applio we have been addressing this key issue for the past 18+ months, we are looking forward to our continued participation at NW and look forward to the Awards Ceremony on 4th February.

If anyone is interesting in seeing HELM, we will be available to demonstrate how HELM achieve the ROI that is required to take the Serious Games market into rapid growth!

And in the process still retain the Gaming experience, which is key as participating in Gaming is voluntary and enjoyable - which is not always true of our 'real world' experiences. Essential Facts - The ESA - 2014 “ Our industry has a remarkable upward trajectory. Computer and video games are a form of entertainment enjoyed by a diverse, worldwide consumer base that demonstrates immense energy and enthusiasm for games. With an exciting new generation of hardware, outstanding software, and unmatched creativity, technology, and content, our industry will continue to thrive in the years ahead.” Michael D. Game Based Learning Game based learning can deliver numerous benefits, communication, behavioral change, strategic thinking, decision making, memory, adaptation, coordination, inclusion and improved attention span. When you compare the above to organisational communication methods like PowerPoint, conferences or Town Hall sessions you can quickly realise the benefits that gaming technologies can deliver.  The greatest strength of an effective outcome to game-based learning is the ability to quickly change the content to allow customisation of the learning experience that can easily be adapted to different business requirements. This type of architecture allows the user to become involved, take part and act, rather than just  listening , taking notes and doing as they are directed. How many times do you remember being told -  The best way of learning something is by doing it. Game based learning solutions require students to communicate, think quickly and u...
BYOD, Games and Employee Engagement It has been a while since my last Post, for that I apologise.....I am busy trying to assist a number of start-ups find their feet! Following on from my last Post, which will now be out-of-date.......as is the way for any quoted statistics. I wonder how much thought employers, especially C level employers give to the gaming industry? Do they realise just how many of their current employees spend playing multiplayer online games, and more importantly the level of engagement that is achieved that does not exist or that they do not bring into the working environment? I wonder if they realise the demographics of the gaming community and how this has changed, no longer is the community adolescent boys hidden away in bedrooms, but a thriving community spanning all ages and both sexes. One of the key areas that will influence future gaming technologies in the workplace is the fact that computing at home or home digital services - machines, so...
